- The Reel Poster Gallery Debuts at the LA Art Show
Every year The Gallery selects one of the leading art shows around the world to curate an exhibition; it’s a wonderful opportunity for our clients to experience the original film posters and artwork in situ. The LA Art Show was our 2014 destination, and one could say a ‘return home’ for many of our posters, such was our close proximity to Hollywood.
The LA Art Show is the largest and longest running art fair in the West. While the sun beat down outside, the Downtown LA Convention Centre was alive with lecture series, special exhibitions and installations, while collectors arrived in their hoards browsing the 140 top tier galleries in participation. As you’d expect there was a glittering open night, and the event welcomed high profile art buyers like Leonardo DiCaprio and Barbara Streisand through its doors.
Our original movie posters were unique in the artworks on offer, receiving particular attention from Californian visitors, many of whom were employed by or closely linked with the film industry. It was no surprise therefore that Disney and original James Bond sold well in this environment, also Warhol. A particular highlight that drew an intrigued crowd of onlookers, was the sale of the French one-panel King Kong (1933), a dramatic and towering design at 63 x 47 inches by artist Roland Coudon (1887 – 1954) which sold for in excess of $30,000.
